Shark Week: Are There Sharks In Lake Conroe?

Happy Shark Week! It’s that time of the year again, where we focus our attention to the oceans to find out any new discoveries about sharks and their habitat!

So let’s answer a fun question: Are there sharks in Lake Conroe?

The answer to this is: No

There are not sharks in Lake Conroe (whew!), but there are many of types of fish and animals in the lake. Some of which have been mistaken for piranha, but are actually Red Pacu- an invasive species that eats other fish in the lake.

While sharks are usually found in saltwater, there are many sharks that can be found in freshwater as well. How do saltwater animals survive in fresh water? Well for the most part, they wouldn’t. There are exceptions to the rule though, and some sharks do venture into the unknown territory. These sharks intake a massive amount of water and use their urine to supplement them with the amount of salt that they need around them to survive (gross!). This process uses a lot of energy for these sharks, as they are basically maintaining their own personal saltwater bubble. They also don’t stay in the fresh water for too long, and will eventually venture back out to the ocean. The Bull shark, for instance, is one of the species of sharks that can live in a freshwater ecosystem. They are also aggressive sharks and can pose threats to other fish in the ecosystem.

So while there are plenty of fish in Lake Conroe, sharks are not one of them. For them to be found in Lake Conroe it would require an enormous amount of energy for the shark, and they likely wouldn’t be able to survive for very long.

Hurricane Season is Here Y'all

Living in the south, we are more familiar with hurricanes than other areas of the country, but just because we are more involved with this phenomena doesn’t mean that we know all the information that we need to.

Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and ends on November 30, where September is the most active month. As the weather gets warmer, and the water in the ocean heats up, vapor is released. As the vapor rises through the atmosphere, it begins creating a circular motion. When this motion builds, the spiral effect accumulates more moisture and creates a massive storm.

Hurricanes come with high winds, and heavy rains. Because of the air pressure it can also cause tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. These storms are categorized by the speed of the wind that they produce. Before a hurricane is formed, there are tropical depressions and tropical storms. These are the first phases of could potentially be a hurricane.

Tropical Depression: Winds below 39 mph
Tropical Storm: Winds between 39 mph and 73 mph

After a storm his 73 mph, it is officially a hurricane. Hurricanes get their own categories based on the strength of the wind, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest.

First of all, it is important to know your surroundings. Especially important for those that live on the lake, be aware of what areas flood easiest and whether or not your house has a chance of getting flooded. Also be aware of dams and levees where they could pose a hazard (especially on Lake Conroe).

If a storm is headed your direction, boarding up the windows is also something to consider. This prevents glass from shattering and harming someone, as well as preventing more damage to your home.

Lastly, know when it is time to evacuate, and how. Find hurricane evacuation routes and keep an ear out for when there are mandatory evacuations.  If there are evacuations in your area, do it. People die every year from hurricanes just because they thought they could "wait it out" or that the evacuations were not necessary.

1097 Watersports: Mission Statement

Here at 1097 Watersports our mission statement is: “Leave your crap at the door.”

Why is this our mission statement? And what exactly does that mean?

At 1097 Watersports we strive to become a safe-haven to unwind and give everyone the chance to take a break from the hustle-bustle that plagues our daily lives. We believe that a dose of the lake can act as a meditation, but in order to succeed at fully being able to relax we have to let all of our problems be forgotten for the hour or so that we can “meditate.”

Being in nature has proven that it can help our well-being. The University of Minnesota says that taking the time to surround yourself in nature improves stress levels and positivity, while people who spend more time inside and around the computer all day are more likely to suffer from depression.

We take care of our bodies in numerous ways: with what we eat, what we drink, but it’s easy to forget to take care of our brains- which is the most important part of our body.

1097 Watersports wants you to take care of your brain, and your whole body, so leave your worries and problems at home and come and relax, have fun and take some time to celebrate yourself and most importantly LEAVE YOUR CRAP AT THE DOOR!

Why you should rent a TriToon from 1097 Watersports

Are you ready to enjoy the beautiful spring weather that is right around the corner? Take advantage of the sunshine and the beauty the Lake Conroe has to offer. What's better than experiencing the Lake from the water? Here at 1097 Watersports, we know owning a boat presents a number of problems.

Come rent a watercraft to enjoy boating on the lake without the hassle of ownership. A TriToon is one of our most popular vessels and we have dedicated this week's blog to highlighting why YOU should rent a triton from 1097 Watersports.

Group-Friendly Boat

With seats arranged in a social setting, a tritoon is a great way to enjoy the company of other passengers, as well as take in all the beautiful scenes the Lake has to offer. Take advantage of our tritoon rental opportunity to bond with your friends and family this summer at on Lake Conroe.

Easy to Access

With a near dock-level platform, boarding our TriToons are a breeze! There is no crawling over seats and down into the vessel, simply step onto the boat and into the seating area, for an easy and safe boarding experience!

Ideal for Cruising

If your group likes to take it easy and explore the Lake, this boat type is the one for you! Although TriToons have a bad wrap for being slow, our vessels will get up and move, when you need it to, going up to 50 mph with a 200hp. A TriToon offers the ideal cruising experience on the lake.

Safety Features

With the wrap around seating and gate blocking the edge of the boat, it is easier to keep passengers inside the boat, especially young ones. A swinging gate allows passengers to enter and exit, but can be closed after everyone is safely inside the boat. This makes it a little less worrisome for parents bringing kids out to enjoy the water. Speaking of kids, the flat platform makes getting up and down the ladder a breeze, when you stop to swim and splash around!

Room for your Group

With plenty of roomy seating options, your group will enjoy spreading out and soaking up the sun, when you rent a TriToon at 1097 Watersports. If you plan to spend the day boating on Lake Conroe you will want to bring coolers for drinks and food along. There will be plenty of room for all of your belongings on our TriToon rental.

Lake Conroe, a Brief History

For many of us in the Greater Houston Area, Lake Conroe serves as a destination for fun!

Whether it be fishing, swimming, boating or re-visiting our favorite Tex-Mex restaurants (Looking at you Fajita Jack's!) most of us can relate Lake Conroe to a good time.

Although we can thoroughly enjoy Lake Conroe’s many amenities, there is much in the history of the lake that is very interesting, but not widely known. The city of Conroe was first settled in 1881, much earlier than the time of Lake Conroe itself. Conroe became a hub for the trains of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. In the late 1800’s, Conroe became a large settlement for people in the lumber industry. Lake Conroe, like many lakes around the nation is actually a manmade lake, and was built in 1973. The reason that the San Jacinto River Authority decided to create such a lake was the Seven Year Drought. In the 1950’s Texas suffered from a drought so dry that it exceeded the Dust Bowl era in agricultural loss. This drought began the extensive projects of water reservoirs around the state, Lake Conroe being one of them!

Since Lake Conroe serves as an alternate water supply (in the case of drought, such as in 2011) this leaves the community with clean water that we can use to use our boats and go swimming. The reservoir has proven to be so successful that it had lasted up until the drought in 2011, and it is slowly building back up. Interestingly enough, even though Lake Conroe has the city name of Conroe, Most of it is actually located in WIllis. Sam Houston National Park also borders Lake Conroe, giving the lake access to different types of wildlife. Lake Conroe also has an array of fish which attracts many fishers, with the “best fishing around” (say that sentence five times fast!). There are so many things to love about Lake Conroe, if it was not for a severe drought that caught many texans off guard, we would not be able to enjoy the many things that Lake Conroe has to offer.

Basic Water Safety

Here at 1097 Watersports we love the lake! The lake, for us, means a good time. While very fun, lake-time can also be dangerous. There are several safety precautions that we should take to ensure the best and safest excursion on the water!

Life Jackets

Life jackets should be worn at all times, especially for weak swimmers. Other floatation devices could deflate while a life jacket will always float.

Drinking

Drinking and Driving is illegal- whether it be a car or boat. Alcohol impairs the nervous system, which affects sensory-motor skills and vision accuracy. Boating while Intoxicated (BWI) can lead to consequences not unlike a DWI- heavy fines and jail time (not to mention the danger being put on yourself and others). If you want to throw a beer back with the boys, hire a driver (this is a service that we can provide!).

Lake Conditions

Keep eyes on the weather and the water. As Texans we know how the weather can change on a dime, and the weatherman is not always right. If the sky starts turning dark and the water is getting choppy, it might be a sign to head back in.

Also keep an eye on others on the lake. People swimming, as well as boating in the water could become a hazard so it would be best to keep eyes peeled and remain aware of the surroundings.

What To Do In An Emergency

If an emergency does happen, call 9-1-1. The lake has patrols that can respond to an emergency. It is also useful to know CPR.

If someone is drowning, throw a flotation device to them. It is not a good idea to go after the person as they can drag you down with them. Ideally throw something with a line attached as you could reel them in.

The American Red Cross has a great list of water safety tips to abide by.

1097 Watersports wants to be the source of a day that you won’t forget, but in the good way: where everyone is SAFE!

We Have Paddle Boards!

We announce today the arrival of our new paddle boards! After receiving many requests we have acquired what you have been asking for!

Even though paddle boards have just recently been the hot topic of summer, they have existed for a very long time. Origins of the recreational paddle board come from Hawaii, where the village chief got to ride the biggest paddle board, while the rest of the village followed suit on smaller ones. The islanders used this to live with nature, and not to deal with nature. Our modern recreational paddle board may have come from Hawaii, however there are plenty of examples of paddle boarding all across the world. In South America, paddle boards are used for fishing which can easily be maneuvered through waves, while in Italy people use paddle boards or gondolas as a mean for transportation.

Paddle boards may have been around for a very long time, but they are evolving and they have been accruing popularity very recently and for good reason! Not only are they a great new way to explore water, they offer a fantastic workout.

Since paddle boards are used standing up (SUP or Standup Paddling), it requires a great amount of core strength, endurance and balance (which means the added bonus of burning a ton of calories!).

In addition to burning calories, it’s just plain fun! While many people who have never tried to paddle board may think that it is too difficult, beginners have taken to paddle boarding rather easily. There are all different ways that people today are using paddle boards. Fishing, surfing, yoga, and it is even a competitive racing sport! There is also a therapeutic side  to paddle boarding. It allows us to access to a mental relaxation, which can spark a passion, a purpose and pleasure through movement. So whether you are trying something new, or getting back onto the board 1097 Watersports has the vessels you need!

Take a STAND for your mind, body & soul through paddle boarding. We have the best location for all of your paddle boarding needs! With ample area to paddle around, and beautiful views there is no better place than 1097 Watersports to relax your mind, strengthen your body, and find balance on the board and with nature.

Join us any day of the week: Reserve your spots here!
